In the Know

In talking with someone, recently, they said they were unsure of what pleased God. So in an attempt to placate him, they did all kinds of community service, and went to church as much as possible.  Now these activities are marvelous, don’t get me wrong, but they don’t make up for not knowing God very well.  Those of us who have been married for some time, know what pleases our mates, and what doesn’t. My husband doesn’t like meatloaf, and has made it clear, so I don’t make it.  If I did he wouldn’t be pleased.  If I continued to make it, it would show that either I had a short memory, or just didn’t care. God makes his likes and dislikes clear for us in scripture.  Are you aware that things like drunkenness,  coarse joking, and foolish talk are on the no-no list?  Well, you should.  Ignorance of the law doesn’t hold up in an earthly courtroom, and it sure won’t win you favor with God.  It should be a joy for us to find out what pleases God, but you need to be familiar with his word.  I think it will surprise you.  Paul in the book of Ephesians, chapter 5, sheds some light on this subject when he say, “Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him. Don’t participate in the things these people do…and, “So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”  God, like Judge Judy, won’t put up with our lack of knowledge, so “Carefully determine what pleases the Lord”, and DO IT!!!
