Crowd of Witnesses

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” Hebrews 12:1. What an amazing sense of exhilaration athletes must experience when performing before an enthusiastic audience. The closest I ever came was finishing up a 5K race, and being greeted with “atta girls” and way to gos”, even though I wasn’t a frontrunner. Our walk with Christ often makes us feel like we’re long distance runners.  In a race there are hills, loose rocks, insects and weather extremes.  In life we  experience setbacks, disappointments, discouragement and heartbreaks.  Where are those adoring fans when you need them?  The Bible, both the Old and New testaments, reveals to us the “races” that people of faith ran before us.  From Moses’ stuttering insecurity and  King David’s sins, to Thomas’ doubts;  they all stand as examples of faith, in spite of setbacks and “weights”.  Any runner knows that you can’t finish the course carrying extra poundage, and neither can we effectively complete the our spiritual “race” burdened with cares and sins. Throw them off, and don’t look back.  That cheering throng surrounds us with their encouragement, reminding us, with every step, that we can do it, just like they did!  Read up on them, and remember there is a crown, and a Gatorade waiting for you at the finish line!!
